Bhutan:
The Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan is known in Tibetan as Druk Yul, “Land of the Thunder Dragon”. Isolated for centuries by its geography, Bhutan gradually opened its frontiers to visitors over the last two decades or so. Topographically, only a narrow strip of Bhutan along the southern border lies in the region of the terai, or lowland. The mighty mountains of the eastern Himalayan chain rise abruptly on its northern border and form not only a political, but also a climactic border separating the dry rocky Tibetan highland from the alpine and subtropical vegetation of Bhutan. Because of seclusion amid the snow clad mountains, old legends have been preserved and continue to exercise a marked influence in the traditions of the sparse population. Explore its magnificent landscapes, observe its monastic and village life and experience a truly fascinating land and culture.
