Bumthankg Ura Festival
(Apr 15 – 26 2005) & (May 04 -15 2006)
Introduction
Ura Yakchu is celebrated at Ura village in Bumthang at an altitude of 10,000 feet. There is about 40-50 closely packed houses alongside cobblestone streets that give the village a medieval atmosphere. The festival is held in the temple overlooking the village. This festival is more like a carnival of the west. Mask dances are also performed here. The women in Ura village cover their head with white cloth piece to protect from the harsh cold wind and carries sheepskin (behind their back) used as cushion and as well as to protect their cloth from the loads they carry. This festival is not only attended by the Ura villagers, but also by the neighboring villages of Pomkhar, Shingkhar, Somrang and vicinity. Bumthang is general name for the four valleys of Ura, Chumey, Tang and Chokhor and is considered to be one of the most beautiful and sacred valleys of Bhutan. These four valleys of Bumthang are dotted with temples, monasteries, prayer flag and stupas. Wherever you visit, myth, legend, folktale and superstition surround you. The traditional stone houses with colorful paintings, intricately carved wooden structures and lush evergreen conifer forest add to the beauty and charm.

This tour offers you an opportunity to travel through the heart of the Kingdom with the diversity of Bhutan's rich flora and fauna. Visits to the valleys of Paro, Thimphu, Wangdue, Phobjikha, Trongsa and Bumthang offer unforgettable views of the mountains, waterfalls, and various species of flowers, religious monuments, fortresses and prayers flags scattered on hillsides. On occasion, you may catch a glimpse of elusive wild animals such as leopards, deer, mountain goats, bears, wild boars, and the Languor during the overland journey. There will be ample opportunities to interact with the friendly people of Bhutan and learn their philosophy of “GROSS NATIONAL HAPPINESS”.
