The Laya Trek
The north-western region of the country is the focus of this trek. Originating at Paro the trails leads you to the base camps of Jangothang and Chomolari and Lingshi Dzong at 4100 m.. Heading in a north easterly direction you traverse three passes over 4400 m. This is the wild north with unparralelled views of the summit of Gangchenta and adjoining peaks. Situated above the treeline is the village of Laya at 3900 meters. The hill people that inhabit this region live in stone houses clustered together surrounded by small fields of Barley, wheat and turnips. Distinctive in dress and custom the Laya women wear their hair long and straight under conical bamboo hats giving them a decidedly unique appearance. The walk down to Punakha from Laya is a walk through astonishing altitudinal and ecological variation. A welcome respite is the famous hot springs at Gasa in addition to the historic Gasa Fortress.
