Doleshwar Mahadev Temple

Doleshwar Mahadev Temple

Doleshwar Mahadev temple shares a similar value to Pashupatinath in terms of a must-visit temple as a part of Kedarnath trip. This temple is situated about 20 km from Kathmandu in Bhaktapur district. According to Shiva devotees, without visiting Pashupatinath and Doleshwor Mahadev temple, the trip to Kedarnath is incomplete. Doleshwar Mahadev has a great significance among devotees as it is a part of once in a lifetime trip. People believe visiting the three holy places: Kedarnath, Pashupatinath, and Doleshwar Mahadev will wash off the sins one has committed in their lifetime.

Historical Significance of the temple

As indicated by Hindu History, during the Mahabharata war of Kurukshetra, the Pandavas slaughtered their relatives among numerous other people. The Pandav brothers left for the Himalayas through Haridwar looking for forgiveness from Lord Shiva for murdering numerous people during the war. But Lord Shiva was not planning to forgive them. He disguised himself as a bull. The Pandavas were determined in their task and even though having known of Lord Shiva’s disguise as the bull that was going to escape, the strongest Pandava, Bheema, got the tail of the bull. In this time, the head of the bull got separated in this tug-of-war from the rest of the body. The rest of the body is believed to be in Kedarnath in the Uttarakhand of India and that devotees have been searching for the head part for over 4000 years.

The head of the bull apparently went straight to Nepal. It was not until August 22 of 2009 that Shree 1008 Jagat Guru Bheemashaankarling Shivacharya, the head priest of Kedarnath declared Doleshwar Mahadev as the head of Kedarnath.
