Kerung is a border town located in the northern part of Nepal. It is around 175 kilometers away from the capital city Kathmandu.
The best way to travel there is by jeep. It normally takes around 6 to 8 hours the Nepal China border in Kerung. Due to the damage done by the earthquake of 2015, construction works are still going on in places along the highway. Nonetheless, the trip is exciting and filled with many cultural and natural highlights. The long and winding road offers great views of the Himalayas. On a clear day, one can expect magnificent views of the Langtang Range.
The Rasuwagadi-Kerung border is planned to be developed as a major junction linking China to the whole of South Asia, thus you will see a lot of development activities. The crossing has been upgraded as an international crossing point for trade to China.
The roads maybe narrow at some places, but this is the only current roadway to reach Tibet. The views are excellent, and the journey is exciting for sure. Make sure to wear comfortable clothes, shoes, and pack in plenty of water as the journey can last more than 8 hours.
